Choosing a perfect "JUST RIGHT BOOK" takes time. I know we often "choose a book by its cover", but remember that it has to be something that you can read and enjoy by yourself.

Tips to help you pick a "Just Right Book"

"TOO EASY"

• Have you read it a lot of times before?
• Do you understand it very well?
• Do you know almost every word?
• Can you read it smoothly?

"JUST RIGHT"

• Is this book new to you?
• Do you understand a lot when you read all of the book?
• Are there a few words per page that you don't know?
• When you read are some places smooth and some choppy?

"TOO HARD"

• Are there more than 5 words on a page that you don't know?
• Are you confused about what is happening in most of the book?
• When you read, does it sound pretty choppy?
• Is everyone else busy and unable to help you?

When you read remember to use our reading strategies!

1. Look for "parts" in the words that you recognize. Blend the sounds together. Look at the vowel rules.

2. Monitor your reading.

3. Evaluate what you have read.

4. Ask yourself if what you read makes sense. If it didn't, go back and reread it.

5. Ask yourself questions as you read.
